About Jodi Miller

Jodi has become prolific in creating mixed media oil paintings in abstract realism. Her paintings invite the viewer to see the journey of overcoming—pursuing truth and hope in the midst of challenges.

Despite being colorblind from birth, Jodi has learned to use this specific challenge not as a limitation, but as one of her superpowers—painting in remarkably stunning color stories that are seeped in layers of intuitive play, prophetic hopes, mark-making, texture, pattern, and light.

About Jodi's Process

Layers of Prayers

jodimillerart, layers of prayers, collage, mark-making, prayers, prayer, commission

I begin each painting with written and painted prayers and prayerful mark-making to activate the canvas. I create multiple layers of mixed media with inks, acrylics, collage and washes of paint before moving into oils. Oil paint is so rich and allows me to push and pull the painting in the directions it wants to go. Each step is undergirded with prophetic hopes that help me paint a world made new, where the old is gone and the new has come.

Even though every painting appears powerful from a distance, up close the hidden nuances truly convey the story of each piece. Mako Fumimura once said that each of his paintings are at least 80 layers of prayers. This powerful statement has inspired me to always be listening, always praying, always believing as I paint. In addition to nature, the female portraiture, and patterns found in textiles, I’m inspired by the use of light to define form and tell a story of hope—pushing out the darkness.
